  15. XANTHUS ANNOUNCES SUPPORT FOR WORD, WORDPERFECT, FRAMEMAKER, AMI
  16. PRO AND WRITENOW FILE FORMATS IN ITS OPENWRITE WORD PROCESSOR FOR
  17. NEXTSTEP

  19. San Diego, CA  1 August 2, 1994 1 Xanthus International today
  20. announced that OpenWrite, the company's new word processor for
  21. NEXTSTEP, will include support for all of the leading Windows, DOS
  22. and Macintosh based word processors. Scheduled for release this
  23. summer, OpenWrite 1.0 will be available for NEXTSTEP on HP PA-RISC,
  24. Intel and Motorola platforms.

  26. OpenWrite will read and write to a large variety of document formats,
  27. including ASCII, RTF, RTFD, WriteNow, Microsoft Word, WordPerfect,
  28. Maker Interchange Format (Framemaker), Lotus Ami Pro and others,
  29. as well as most of the popular graphics formats found on the
  30. Macintosh and PC platforms.

  32. *Exchanging documents with users on other platforms is an extremely
  33. important issue for NEXTSTEP users and OpenWrite meets all demands:

  35. added that *OpenWrite is currently being evaluated at most large
  36. NEXTSTEP enterprise deployments, and we've added this support at
  37. their request. We'll deliver an extremely robust, full-featured
  38. word processor tailored to meet customer needs.:

  40. OpenWrite is designed for the everyday word processor user and has
  41. most of the features found in an application like Microsoft Word,
  42. including headers, footers, footnotes, hierarchical styles, variables,
  43. borders, multi-level undo, mailmerge, NEXTSTEP spell-checking and
  44. multiple columns, as well as user controllable wrap-around graphics
  45. (fixed and floating), kerning, tracking, and free-floating text
  46. blocks. A future release will include support for multifile books,
  47. cross-references, table of contents, indexing and redlining.

  49. OpenWrite also supports Xanthus) new Open Object Embedding (OOE)
  50. standard. The OOE standard allows for compound documents to be
  51. created and manipulated quickly and easily, and is built around
  52. standard NEXTSTEP building blocks such as Distributed Objects and
  53. the NEXTSTEP Pasteboard. For example, from within OpenWrite, the
  54. user can create spreadsheets, graphics, tables, etc., by using
  55. other applications that are OOE compliant. Current OOE compliant
  56. applications include Xanthus Questor (spreadsheet), Xanthus Graphity
  57. (charts and graphing), Xanthus BusinessDraw (diagram drawing),
  58. Digital Tool Works EquationBuilder (equation editor), Draw++
  59. (drawing, free with OpenWrite) and Yap++ (postScript editing, free
  60. with OpenWrite). Support for OOE is also planned in Tiffany II
  61. (image processing) from Benchmark Development and Tailor (postscript
  62. editor) from FirstClass NV.

  64. In addition, OpenWrite has a robust API that is built on top of
  65. NeXT's Distributed Objects framework and allows for programatic
  66. opening, saving and creation of OpenWrite documents. The most
  67. powerful part of the API is the capability to dynamically load a
  68. module into OpenWrite, which can be called automatically at certain
  69. events.
